Updates regarding the current Tax Assessment & Increase:
We are encouraging businesses that faced a substantial Tax Increase after the 2021 Assessment to file an appeal with the City of Saskatoon. Information regarding the appeal process is available at https://www.saskatoon.ca/services-residents/property-tax-assessments/property-tax/assessment-appeals . Filing a formal assessment appeal must be done between January 4th 2022 and February 4th 2022. There is a fee for filing an appeal as per Bylaw 7595 and the rates are as follows: Multi-unit residential property and commercial property with a total assessment of $500,000 or less – $150.00. More than $500,000 but less than $1,000,000 – $500.00, & $1,000,000 or more – $750.00. We recommend before filing an appeal you read through the “Frequently Asked Questions about Filing a Formal Appeal” which is listed at the bottom of the Assessment Appeals page of the City of Saskatoon website (linked above).
We have also heard updates from Councillor David Kirton and he stated that he “can confirm that there is going to be a review of the assessment system. Saskatoon is partnering with SUMA and other municipalities to hire the International Property Tax Institute. IPTI comes highly recommended and has a very good reputation for its understanding of property tax and assessment systems.”
We understand the difficulties this Tax Increase has had on our district and are hopeful that this information may help with this process. If you have any outstanding concerns or are having difficulties with the appeal process, please let us know and we will assist you in any way possible.
Some businesses may receive a 2022 Assessment Notice for their property if there has been a change to the assessment from the previous year, tax status, or ownership.
Important dates to note are:
February 4th 2022 – last day to file a formal assessment appeal,
February 2022 to April 2022 – Amended assessment notices will be mailed out,
May 2022 – Property Tax notices mailed out,
June 30th 2022 – Property Tax payment is due.
